These programs have been specially created with the needs of educators and their students in mind. Per-program charges apply. Groups larger than 20 students may need to be split up to accommodate.

Whale Biology Artifact Station
(Grades K-12)

Experience whale biology and anatomy in this multi-sensory hands-on program underneath our 46 foot sperm whale skeleton! Look, touch, and smell your way through this exciting program, which is easily adaptable to all audiences and knowledge levels. (30 minutes)


Specialized Guided Tours
(Grades K-12)

Tour the museum with an NHA guide.
(30 minutes)

Topics include:

  • Highlights: Explore the “highlights” of the Whaling Museum’s collections.
  • Scrimshaw: Learn about the art of Scrimshaw and examine pieces from the NHA’s collections.
  • The Bold and the Brave: Nantucket Women through the Ages: Meet some of Nantucket’s bravest and boldest women and learn of their invaluable contributions to the island’s history.

Historic Arts & Crafts
(Grades K-12)

Create crafts with an historic flair, and take them home to remember your visit. (30 minutes)

Projects include:

  • Sailors’ Valentines (ages 5 & up)
  • Replica Scrimshaw (ages 7 & up; great for older students)
  • Plastic Cup Lighthouses (ages 7 & up)

Everyday Life in the Colonial Days
(Grades K-5)

Explore life on Nantucket in the colonial period at the Oldest House & Kitchen Garden. Visitors tour the house, learn about medicinal herbs and spices in the kitchen garden, and try their hand at colonial games. (Available May-October; 1 hour)


Introduction to the Quaker Meeting House
(Grades K-12)

Learn about the religion that itinerant ministers brought to colonial Nantucket in the 1700s and shaped the island for years to come. Visitors will explore the architecture, listen to stories of Nantucket Quakers in this serene environment, and gain an understanding of the beliefs, values, culture, and accomplishments of Quakers. Each visit concludes with a moment of silent reflection in the Quaker tradition. (Available March-December, 45 minutes)

Downtown Walking Tour
(Grades 3-12)

Walk through historic downtown Nantucket with an NHA guide and discover the unique history of the island. Visitors use the town as their classroom and leave with a newfound appreciation for this small island’s international significance. (Available May-October, 1 hour)


PAYMENT
Payment is required on arrival. Payment is due in one lump sum, payable by cash, credit card, or check. Payment prior to arrival may be negotiated, but processing fees apply for any changes made to a pre-paid reservation.

RESERVATION INFORMATION
Reservations are required for school and youth programs and are booked on a first-come, first-served basis. Groups may choose as many programs as they would like; per-program charges may apply.

CHAPERONE POLICY
All groups must be accompanied by adult chaperones. Chaperones are responsible for the conduct and well-being of the students in their group.

A minimum of one chaperone per every six students is required for groups in grades Pre-K through 5. A minimum of one chaperone per every twelve students in required for groups in grades 6 through 12.

The Nantucket Historical Association preserves and interprets the history of Nantucket through its programs, collections, and properties, in order to promote the island’s significance and foster an appreciation of it among all audiences.
