NANTUCKET, MA – An award-winning line-up of interior designers, including Nate Berkus, Alexa Hampton, and Corey Damen Jenkins will be the Keynote Speakers at the Nantucket Historical Association’s summer fundraiser, Nantucket by Design, which is scheduled to be held virtually Aug. 5-7.
Since Nate Berkus established his award-winning interior design firm at the age of 24, his approachable and elevated philosophy has transformed countless homes around the world through his design work, home collections, books, and television shows. His work has been featured in publications such as Architectural Digest, House Beautiful, VOGUE, InStyle, O Magazine and People. He is included on the ELLE DÉCOR A-List of the world’s top designers and Architectural Digest’s AD100 List. Berkus will be the Keynote Speaker at the Design Luncheon on Thursday, Aug. 5.
Since Alexa Hampton took the reins of Mark Hampton, her father’s iconic firm, as owner and president in 1998, she has advanced its legacy of elegant, practical, classically based interiors for modern living – and extended its global reach. Regularly named to the AD100 and House Beautiful’s Top Designer list as well as Elle Décor’s A-List, Hampton translates the classical principles of good design and decoration into some of today’s most elegant, enduring, and functional domestic landscapes and home collections. Hampton will be the Keynote Speaker at the Nantucket Summer Antiques Show virtual Preview on Thursday, Aug. 5.
Corey Damen Jenkins mixes vivid colors with layered patterns to create architecturally inspired spaces that are polished, inventive and unexpected. Jenkins is an inducted member of AD100 and was named to ELLE Decor‘s A-List in 2020. His bold interiors have graced the front covers of House Beautiful, Traditional Home and more. He has also been featured in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Detroit News, and Vanity Fair. Televised audiences declared Jenkins the winner of HGTV’s competition series Showhouse Showdown. Most recently, Jenkins has appeared as a guest design expert on The Rachael Ray Show and Open House TV. His first coffee table book, Design Remix: A New Spin On Traditional Rooms (Rizzoli), will be released worldwide March 23, 2021. Jenkins will be the Closing Keynote Speaker on Saturday, Aug. 7.
In its sixth year, Nantucket by Design celebrates the island’s unique influence on American design. This will be the second year it will be held virtually, delivering an exclusive Nantucket experience to an audience around the world and raising money for the NHA to continue its commitment to steward and preserve the heritage of Nantucket.
This year’s events bring together the world’s top talent in interior design and will offer curated lectures, discussion panels, house tours, an online silent auction, and the imaginative work of New York School of Interior Design (NYSID) students as they bring contemporary design values into NHA historical properties. Participants will also enjoy the continued partnership with The Nantucket Summer Antiques Show, which will be held in person with proper safety protocols in place with a virtual Preview.
Exciting new additions to the Nantucket by Design line-up include an Architecture and Design Discussion with Pietro Cicognani and Isabella Rossellini on Friday, Aug. 6, as well as a community give-back event held on Saturday, Aug. 7.
Born in Bologna, Italy, Pietro Cicognani was interested in the built form from a very early age. Cicognani studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris, received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts and Master of Architecture from Columbia University. After graduation, he worked for Mitchell/Giurgola Architects in New York on several large scale projects, including the new Parliament House in Australia and eventually relocating to Canberra, Australia to continue working on the project. Upon returning to New York to found Cicognani Kalla Architect in 1985, Cicognani also began teaching in the design studio at Columbia University. In fall 2020 Vendome published his book Pietro Cicognani: Architecture and Design, for which Isabella Rossellini wrote the foreword.
Isabella Rossellini grew up in Paris and Rome. When she was 19, she moved to New York City, working as a translator and a journalist. She began a modeling career at the relatively advanced age of 28, appearing on numerous covers of magazines such as VOGUE, Elle, Harper’s Bazaar and Vanity Fair. An enduring style icon, in 1982 Ms. Rossellini began a 14-year run as the exclusive spokesperson for Lancôme. Ms. Rossellini made her cinematic debut as an actress in 1979 in the Taviani brother’s film Il Prato (“The Meadow”) and has appeared in numerous other films since then. She is also a successful television actress and filmmaker.
“As our thoughts turn to summer on our beautiful island, we are so excited for the plans for this year’s Nantucket by Design. Our theme this year is Renewal, and we look forward to incredible discussions about how design can renew not just a home but also a spirit, as well as focus discussions on how to renew our treasured antique homes in a thoughtful way for modern life. We are so honored to welcome our entire line-up of designers this year. We are awed by their talent and cannot wait to virtually welcome them to Nantucket,” said Kelly Williams, chair.
Stay tuned for more exciting news to come about our panel discussion line-up.
