NHA Announces New Historic Walking Tour

Oldest House Kitchen Garden.NANTUCKET, MA – The Nantucket Historical Association (NHA) is delighted to launch a new walking tour in May, 2018.
The Historic House & Garden Tour will open on May 26, 2018 in addition to NHA’s popular Downtown Walking Tour. The new tour will entail visits to three historic houses in Nantucket town, all part of NHA’s collection of historic sites. Visitors will explore two centuries of life on Nantucket and catch a glimpse into the lives of people and characters who have inhabited the homes along the tour.

The Historic House & Garden Tour will highlight the nineteenth century Hadwen House, a Greek revival home on built during the height of the whaling industry, the Thomas Macy House, a Federal-style home, built in the seventeenth century, and Greater Light, an eighteenth century livestock barn that was converted to an artist studio and summer home in the 1930s. These three homes reflect the ebb and flow of people to Nantucket, representing the island’s two key historic industries, whaling and tourism, which shaped the local economy and created the Nantucket of today.
In addition to the stories of these three homes and their gardens, the tour will also provide visitors with insight to Nantucket’s architecture, society, and domestic life through the centuries.

The Historic House & Garden Tour will be offered daily at 1:30 p.m. through October 8, 2018 and is approximately ninety minutes. Tickets are $10 and may be purchased at the Whaling Museum.

The Nantucket Historical Association preserves and interprets the history of Nantucket through its programs, collections, and properties, in order to promote the island’s significance and foster an appreciation of it among all audiences.
