NANTUCKET, MA – The Nantucket Historical Association (NHA) is excited to relaunch NHA University on Tuesday, September 15. Running as a bi-weekly e-newsletter, NHA University is a free educational resource with, new this fall, a corresponding series of paid virtual lectures.
With the summer break now coming to an end, NHA University is starting up with a fresh new course-based format. Each course will run for two months and explore various history topics including women’s history, Black history, and archaeology. Receiving the NHA University e-newsletter will remain free for all, while accompanying lectures will be $5 each and held via Zoom.
Our first semester, launching next week, will explore notable Nantucket women and will feature speakers such as Dr. Catherine Allgor (President, Massachusetts Historical Society), Dr. Valerie Paley (Senior Vice President, New-York Historical Society), Barbara Ann White (NHA Research Fellow), and Betsy Tyler (NHA Research Fellow).
NHA University was first created in January 2020 as a staff professional development program featuring a series of classroom-style lectures on various Nantucket history topics, held in the Whaling Museum. With the intended goal to develop this program for the public to experience in-person, NHA staff shifted their plans as public programming went virtual due to Covid-19. The result was an NHA University e-newsletter sent weekly from March to early June and with a geographic focus to enrich at-home learning and provide “a semester during your sequester.”
