NANTUCKET, MA – The Nantucket Historical Association (NHA) is pleased to announce a special concert with the band Brooklyn Blowhards this Friday, July 22, 2016 at 6 P.M. the Whaling Museum, 13 Broad Street.
The Brooklyn Blowhards will perform traditional sea shanties in their signature jazzy improvisational style drawing inspiration from the free jazz saxophonist Albert Ayler. Their group includes some of the leading improvisers from the jazz and new music scene.
The Brooklyn Blowhards features Jeff Lederer (tenor/soprano saxophones), Mary LaRose (vocals), Joe Fiedler (trombone), Stephen LaRosa (percussion), and Erica Mancini (accordion).
“The NHA is excited to welcome the Brooklyn Blowhards to the Whaling Museum for this special evening concert,” says Brianne Roth, NHA Public Programs Coordinator. “Music lovers are sure to find delight in the Brooklyn Blowhards’ spin on classic whaling ballads and we are excited to add some new sounds to the Whaling Museum’s roster of great performers.”
Jeff Lederer, the band’s leader and saxophonist adds, "I am so excited to bring the music of the Brooklyn Blowhards to the geographical heart of the historical whaling industry - Nantucket island! I made my first visit to Nantucket last summer, and was captivated by the place for its deep sense of connection to history, as well as its deep connection to the seas around it. Herman Melville warns every man to not ‘step off that isle, for thou may never return.’ I am so happy to return to Nantucket this summer, this time to perform at the beautiful Whaling Museum with my group, and connect the music with the place that inspired it. "
Tickets for this concert are $10/person and available at www.nha.org/tickets. Advance registration is recommended.
