NANTUCKET, MA – The Nantucket Historical Association (NHA), in collaboration with the Nantucket Atheneum, is pleased to present the Moby-Dick Marathon reading beginning Friday, October 21, 2016, at Noon and ending approximately at 2 P.M. on Sunday, October 23, 2016.
Instead of a continuous reading throughout the night, this year’s Moby-Dick Marathon will take place over the span of three days, with a break each evening. Approximately ninety participants will take turns reading aloud all 135 chapters plus the epilogue from Herman Melville’s classic American novel Moby-Dick; Or, The Whale.
The reading will begin at the Atheneum at 1 India Street on Friday, October 21, 2016 at Noon and move to the Whaling Museum at 13 Broad Street at 6 P.M. on that same evening, concluding at 10 P.M. It will reconvene at the Atheneum on Saturday, October 22, 2016 at 10 A.M. and last until 9 P.M. that day. The final day of the reading will take place on Sunday, October 23, 2016 from 10 A.M. to approximately 2 P.M.
“This is the fifth year of the Moby-Dick Marathon and it is becoming a beloved community event that attracts readers and spectators from all corners of Nantucket. Herman Melville’s epic story of the sea really comes alive when you hear it read out loud, says Amy Jenness, Head Adult Program Coordinator for the Atheneum. “As one of the organizers, I really enjoy seeing how much everyone gets into it. They bring their own copy of Moby-Dick and follow along. People read together with coworkers, members of their family or of their book group. The event really is a perfect marriage of community, great literature and Nantucket history.”
Over the course of the evening, chapters will be read by members of the Nantucket community including teachers, students, writers, historians, poets, actors, and more.
“We are delighted to partner with the Atheneum for another installment of the Moby-Dick Marathon Reading,” says Brianne Roth, NHA Public Programs Coordinator. “It’s fantastic to witness the Nantucket community come together to support this program and bring a renewed excitement to Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick.”
Admission for the Moby-Dick Marathon is free and open to the public.
