NHA’s Popular Food for Thought Lecture Series Resumes in February

NANTUCKET, MA –The Nantucket Historical Association (NHA) is pleased to announce that the 2017 Food for Thought lecture series will resume on February 16, 2017, with a new line-up of weekly speakers. This free community program is presented every Thursday from Noon to 1 P.M. at the Whaling Museum, 13 Broad Street.

The spring 2017 Food for Thought lecture series features presenters from Nantucket and beyond. Speakers include local authors, photographers, and representatives of businesses, organizations, and public-interest groups who provide engaging lectures on timely topics that are aligned with Nantucket’s rich culture. Audience members are encouraged to bring a brown-bag lunch while listening to these informative lectures at the Whaling Museum.

Thursday, February 16, 2017: “Nantucket: Traditions and Transitions of the Faraway Island” with Melissa Murphy

Melissa Murphy is the Director of Culture and Tourism for the Town of Nantucket. Taking on leadership of what was previously known as the Department of Visitor Services, she shares her insights on transformation and new initiatives for Nantucket.

Her expertise lies in blending creativity, planning, and innovation to meet the strategic and financial goals of organizations for maximum community impact. Currently, Murphy is using these skills to support initiatives around the important economic engines of cultural heritage, event management, and tourism on Nantucket. Until February of 2016, she was the Executive Director of the Nantucket Dreamland Foundation. Murphy lives on Nantucket year-round, with her husband, two children, and their two Jack Russell terriers.


Thursday, February 23: “What’s New at the Nantucket Lightship Basket Museum” with Mary Bergman

The Nantucket Lightship Basket Museum’s newly appointed Executive Director Mary Bergman discusses the new exhibit at the museum that celebrates Nantucket craftswomen.

Mary Bergman is the Executive Director of the Nantucket Lightship Basket Museum, after two years as the museum’s director. Her background is in museum studies and historical interpretation. Issues of gender and women studies unite Bergman’s areas of research interest, which include maritime history, human spaceflight, and, of course, Nantucket’s decorative arts and craftspeople. She has held positions at the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center, the National Air and Space Museum, and the Nantucket Historical Association. Bergman holds a B.A. in American Studies/Museum Studies from Smith College and an M.A. in Public History from American University. She is active in the Nantucket community and serves on the committee of the Nantucket Book Festival, and the Nantucket Cultural District Steering Committee.


Food for Thought provides a fantastic opportunity for Nantucket residents to learn more about the island and one another,” says Brianne Roth, NHA Public Programs Coordinator. “It is so rewarding to be able to offer Nantucketers a free, lunch-time community program on a wide range of topics, from history to nature, arts to mental health, right in the heart of downtown.” 

The Food for Thought lecture series began in the fall of 2006.  At that time, NHA Gosnell Executive Director Bill Tramposch said, “The mission of the NHA is to infuse a greater appreciation and respect for the important historic role that Nantucket has played in national and world heritage. We also aspire to reach and serve diverse audiences as a year-round organization.” That mission is as central to the NHA today as it was then and the Food For Thought series is an integral part of the fall and spring programming schedule.
