The Research Library will not copy materials if doing so would violate copyright law or donor restrictions or if copying risks damaging the materials. The Research Library charges fees for reproductions in order to offset the cost of producing copies. Please see our NHA Reproduction and License Fee Schedule (PDF) for more information.
Reference Reproductions
Reference reproductions are for personal use only. They may not be donated or deposited in other libraries or archives. Ownership of reproduced material does not imply permission to publish. It is the sole responsibility of the researcher to obtain written, formal permission from the Nantucket Historical Association or the appropriate copyright owner.
Researchers are encouraged to use their personal cameras to capture reference images of materials. Researchers must turn off the camera flash and silence any camera sounds. Please see our Research Library Photography Guidelines for more information.
In-person researchers can request black-and-white photocopies of up to 30 pages per day. All photocopying is done by library staff with the exception of microfilm copying, which is self-serve. The Research Library offers limited photocopying services for remote researchers who are unable to receive digital files. Photocopies are $0.25 per page.
Both in-person and remote researchers can request low-resolution reference scans of most material in our collections. Loose manuscripts and photographs (less than 11” x 17”) are reproduced on a flatbed scanner.
For remote researchers, all requests must be placed by completing the Media Reproduction Request form. Please provide as much information as possible; search our collections catalog to locate the collection, folder, and/or item number you wish to have reproduced.
We respond to all requests in the order in which they are received, and our typical initial response time is within 10 business days. Once your request is approved, library staff will provide an estimate of the time required to complete the request and a preliminary invoice for your approval.
Once an order has been completed (typically 5-10 business days) and the invoice is paid in full, your files (typically PDFs) will be delivered electronically.
High-Resolution Reproductions
The Nantucket Historical Association provides publication quality, high-resolution digital images of materials in our collections. In most cases, the NHA produces full-color 300-600dpi JPEG files.
All high-resolution reproduction requests should be submitted by completing the Media Reproduction Request form. Please include as much information as possible; search our collections catalog to locate the collection, folder, and/or item number you wish to have reproduced.
A typical initial response time is ten business days. This response will include an estimate of the time required to complete the request and a preliminary invoice for your approval. Once the order details are confirmed, your order is submitted for fulfillment, which can take up to fifteen business days. When the images are available for delivery, you will receive a final invoice. Once the invoice is paid in full, your images will be delivered via email or WeTransfer.
If you are concerned about meeting a publication deadline, please indicate it in your initial email so that we can determine if we can accommodate your needs. There is a $25 per order rush fee.
Photo Prints
The Nantucket Historical Association offers the option to purchase color prints of materials within our collections. We offer prints in both 11” x 14” and 8.5” x 11”. Please visit the NHA Museum Shop for more information.
