Guide to the Account Books Collection, 1683–1983

This is a finding aid. It is a description of archival material held in the Research Library at the Nantucket Historical Association. Unless otherwise noted, the materials described below are physically available in our reading room, and not digitally available through the internet.

Summary

This is an artificial collection of account books assembled by the Nantucket Historical Association. This collection includes 469 financial books of individuals, businesses and some tradesmen, as well as financial records of ships.

Biographical Information

This is an artificial collection of account books assembled by the Nantucket Historical Association.

Scope and Content

Financial books of individuals, businesses and some tradesmen, also financial records of ships. 469 account books give current prices through the years of Nantucket’s growth. Of particular interest are the accounts of the small businesses which served the whaling industry as well as the farmers and householders who stayed home.

Materials in this collection were digitized with support from Connie and Tom Cigarran.

Volume contains records of crew members’ withdrawals during the ship Hero’s 1858–1859 voyage and the brig Ocean Wave’s voyage during 1864.
AB 2 Barrett and Upton invoice book 1836–1845
Volume includes a spermaceti candle invoices along with printed information on navigation and oil manufacturing.
AB 3 Barrett and Upton account book and notebook 1836–1845
Volume includes accounts with, as well as information on, the ship United States (1841), ship Napoleon (1842), ship Walter Scott (1844), ship Maria (1842), and ship Ontario (1843), along with information on navigation and oil manufacturing.
AB 4 Ship Adeline account book 1833–1837
Volume contains crew members’ expenses and disbursements while in the Pacific as well as records of supplies taken on board for the ship Adeline’s voyage out of New Bedford, Mass.
AB 5 Dry goods merchandise inventory 1856–1857
Volume chiefly contains records of fabric and sewing supplies sold in dry goods store during 1857, as recorded by Susan H. Folger (1815–1900). Also includes a list of “literary greats”, compiled by Andrew M. Folger (1835–1880).

Volume contains records of crew members’ wages for the ship Andes’ voyage to Shanghai, China.

Volume includes sales of clothing, dry goods, hardware and other items.

Volume includes sales, ship accounts, payment of crew members, supplies, oil sales, and the repair and outfitting of ships.

Volume contains account records for the sale of general supplies, local meat, and dairy products.

AB 11 Dry goods store account book March–October 1829
Most of the volume was later used as a scrap book and the original text is obscured by newspaper clippings.
AB 12 Blacksmith ledger (account book) 1861–1874
Volume contains records of account for a blacksmith during the period of 1861–1874. Volume also contains lighthouse accounts on page 66. Volume may have been kept by J.W. Clapp.
AB 13 Peter Chase and Francis Chase account book 1832–1838
Volume contains records of articles and food received from Peter Chase, acting overseer in 1832, as well as shipments of food received from town farm at Pocomo during 1851–1854. Volume also contains journal of other activities.

Volume includes expense accounts.
AB 17 Ship Napoleon, Ship Ocean and Ship Petrel account book and log book 1853–1867
Volume contains disbursements and crew members’ accounts for the ship Ocean during 1853-1856, the ship Petrel during 1857-1862, and the ship Napoleon during 1864-1867. Volume also contains log of the ship Napoleon for its 1864 voyage out of New Bedford Mass. During the period of 1853–1856 this volume was kept by William C. Fuller.
AB 18 Brant Point Station lighthouse service watchbook 1936–1944
Volume was created under the auspices of the Dept. of Commerce. Volume includes information such as the time of start and finish of shift, the condition of the light and the condition of the fog signal. During the period of 1936–1943 this volume was kept by Gerald Reed, H. W. Craig as well as others.
AB 19 Brant Point light station journal 1940–1945
Volume includes information on repairs, activities, weather and the state of the lighthouse.
AB 20 Thomas Macy post office ledger 1826–1834
One volume contains records of account for a Post Office during the period of 1826–1834. During said period this volume was kept by Thomas Macy. The other volume contains a list of names with amounts owed next to them and may also have been kept by Thomas Macy.
AB 21 David Gorham Hussey dental records 1867–1886
Volume contains dental records of David Gorham Hussey’s patients. Volume contains entries for people of various ethnic backgrounds including Eliza K. King on p. 223, Hattie Copeland on p. 246, Katie Downey on p. 198, and Katy Morse on p. 309. At the bottom of the image that accompanies this description is a dental record for a Benjamin Lawrence, for the year 1871.This may possibly be the Benjamin Lawrence who survived the loss of the ship Essex.

Volume contains records of account for Railroad Bonds.
Top of each filled page in the volume, is labeled “Town of Nantucket in account with Isaac Macy (Treasurer of Railroad Committee)”.

Nature of the business recorded in the volume is undeciphered. The location of business recorded in the volume is presumed to have been in Nantucket, Mass., but unconfirmed.

Volume contains records related to common and individual Iand and land transactions as well as a census in back of the volume dated possibly circa 1850.

AB 30 Ship Alpha account book and merchandise inventory 1846–1850
Volume contains records for the ship Alpha’s1846–1850 voyage, including disbursements, supplies and crew members’ accounts.
AB 31 Robert McCleave account book 1872–1899
Volume contains records of stocks and dividends for the period of 1872–1899, as well as taxes paid for the period of 1829–1881.
AB 32 Bark Peru account book June 1855
Volume contains account records for the bark Peru for June 1855 during its 1851–1855 voyage out of Nantucket. During said voyage the bark Peru was captained by Charles E. Starbuck.
AB 33 Ship Jireh Perry outfit book August 1879
Volume contains information on the outfitting of supplies for the bark Jireh Perry, for its voyage from New Bedford, Mass., as captained by Amos A. Chase. The bark Jireh Perry was built in South Dartmouth, Mass., by Matthews, Mashow & Co. in 1853.
AB 34 Bark Henry H. Crapo outfit book June 1854
Volume contains information concerning the bark Henry H. Crapo’s second voyage, including a complete list of supplies and outfitting. The bark Henry H. Crapo was built in South Dartmouth, Mass., by Matthews, Mashow & Co. in 1852. The bark sank 19 January 1857 under the command of Captain Archelaus Baker Jr., who was this volume’s keeper and one of two survivors of the incident.

AB 36 Schooner Era outfit book 1880
Volume contains a list of supplies for a voyage of the schooner Era. Book was filled out on the recommendation of Captain John Spicer. The keeper of this volume is unknown.
AB 37 Judith Macy daybook 1783–1805
Volume contains account records of spinning, lodging and dry goods sales.
AB 38 J. J. Gardner account book 1834–1861
Volume includes records of land rent for the period of 1834–1846, as well as grocery store and house accounts for the period of 1836–1860.
AB 39 Ship Mario and Ship Martha account book 1825–1828
Volume contains records of account for the ship Mario and the Ship Martha for the period of 1825–1828. Volume contains mainly miscellaneous newspaper articles, as the majority of the volume was later used as a scrap book.
AB 40 Latham Paddock account book 1820–1822
Volume contains the accounts of the ship Bourbon.
AB 41 Commercial Wharf account book 1832–1841
Volume includes business transactions. Oliver C. Gardner was the wharfinger of the Commercial Wharf during this period.
AB 42 Ship Enterprise account book and merchandise inventory 1854–1858
Volume includes a complete inventory of stores, accounts of crew and officers disbursements for the ship during its 1854–1858 voyage. During said voyage the ship Enterprise’s agent was E. W. Gardner and its captain was John Brown.
AB 43 Daybook 1841–1847
Volume contains account records of clerical and accountant services rendered as well as accounts for shipping and for sales of vegetable produce. Volume may have been created by William H. Waite.

Volume contains personal transactions of Micajah Coffin, including selling to the sloop Sandwich, ship Swallow, ship Lion and packet ship Delaware.

Volume contains records of accounts for a waterfront store.

Volume includes accounts of stocks, bonds and holdings with their dividends.

AB 50 Ship Hero account book 1842–1845
Volume contains records of the ship Hero including crew members’ accounts for its 1841–1846 voyage out of Nantucket. During this period the ship Hero was owned by Joseph Starbuck and was commanded by Captain William S. Chase.
AB 51 Ship Henry Clay account book 1847–1852
Volume contains records from the ship Henry Clay’s 1847–1852 voyage out of Nantucket, including crew members’ accounts. During said voyage the ship Henry Clay was owned by Christopher Wyer who also acted as its agent.
AB 52 Oliver L. Chase account book 1859–1861
Volume includes information on stocks and holdings.
AB 53 Ship John Adams account book and William Rawson farm accounts 1845–1849, 1852–1855
Volume contains records of the ship John Adams, for the period of 1845–1849 including disbursements and voyage finances. During said period the ship John Adams was owned by Francis B. Folger and Captained by William Rawson. Volume also contains records of account for a farm on Nantucket for the period of 1852–1855.
AB 54 Ship Hero account book 1851–1855
Volume contains records of account for the ship Hero’s 1851-1855 voyage out of Nantucket, including crew members’ disbursements and supplies purchased during the voyage. During said voyage the ship Hero was captained by Joseph McCleave. Volume also contains a list of births and deaths of Nantucketers for the period of 1717–1864, which is not in chronological order. Volume also contains a list of persons that died by shipwreck or at sea for the period of 1722–1821.

Volume contains accounts of an unknown business or person.

AB 57 Alexander S. Chase account book and merchandise inventory 1847–1848
Volume contains cooper’s accounts and merchandise inventories, including deliveries of oil casks.
AB 58 Lot Chase daybook 1837
Volume contains information on Lot Chase accounts in Boston, Mass., which may be shipments.
AB 59 Ship Alligator account book and merchandise inventory April 1804
Volume contains crew members’ accounts as well as oil book records. Said records concern the ship’s 1803–1804 voyage, during which it was owned by Micajah Coffin and Sons, as well as captained by David Swain. The keeper of this volume may have been a person by the name Macy. The volume contains accounts for Seneca Boston, as well as a reference to a doctor.
AB 60 Ship Alligator account book February 1806
Volume contains sales of oil from a voyage out of Nantucket, 1804–1808, during which Micajah Coffin and Sons were the owners and David Swain was captain.
Volume may have been kept by a person with the name Macy. Volume contains accounts for Seneca Boston as well as a reference to a “doctor box”. Volume appears to be covered with wallpaper.
AB 61 John Barnard day book 1699–1713, 1728–1738
The volume’s first section is a day book, spanning 1699-1713, and is followed by records of farm work spanning 1728-1738. Volume also contains personal transactions from the later period. Volume’s rear cover is affixed with a metal clasp inscribed with the design of a whale’s tale.
AB 62 Schooner Adelia Chase account book 1886–1889
Volume contains account records for the schooner Adelia Chase’s 1886–1889 voyage out of New Bedford, Mass. During said voyage the schooner Adelia Chase was captained by Michael A. Ferriera.
AB 63 Schooner Adelia Chase, Schooner Lottie E. Cook and Bark Veronica account book 1880–1883, 1882
Volume contains records for the Schooner Adelia Chase during the period of 1880–1883 for its 1880–1882 voyage out of New Bedford, Mass.
Volume also contains records for the schooner Lottie E. Cook during the period of 1880–1883 for both its 1880–1882 and 1882–1883 voyages out of New Bedford, Mass.
During said voyages the schooner Lottie E. Cook was captained by Antone Vieira. Volume also contains records for the bark Veronica for the year 1882 for a voyage out of New Bedford, Mass. During said period the Bark Veronica was captained by Erastus Church.
AB 64 Ship Alpha account book 1838–1841
Volume contains records of account for the ship Alpha including purchases of supplies and crew members’ accounts. During the period this volume was kept the owner and agent of the ship Alpha was Nathanial Barney and its captain was Joseph Congdon.
AB 65 Ship Constitution account book 1857–1863
Volume contains records for the ship Constitution 2nd, including accounts during voyage, and disbursements.
During the period this volume was kept the owners of the of the Ship Constitution II were C.G. Coffin and H. Coffin. Also during said period the owner of the Ship Constitution II was Joseph Winslow.
First pages of this volume have been later used for a scrap book focusing on lace making. In the front of the book are a couple of pages with crochet instructions (this may be a later hand, although the handwriting does appear to be that of a man), as well as several pages of crochet patterns clipped from newspapers and glued into the book.
AB 66 Bark Peru account book, invoice and merchandise inventory 1851–1853
Volume contains records of provisions, crew members’ accounts during voyage and their pay after their return for the bark Peru during the period of 1851–1853.
During said period the Bark Peru was captained by Charles E. Starbuck. Volume includes a handwritten and signed letter from David Thain to Charles E. Starbuck, dated 12 May, 1851 which gives instructions (draft copy).
AB 67 Bark Peru account book, invoice and merchandise inventory 1851–1855
Volume contains records for the bark Peru including a list of supplies, crew members’ accounts, disbursements and comments on crew’s behavior. During the period this volume was kept the Bark Peru was captained by Charles E. Starbuck. The volume’s first pages include a handwritten and signed letter copy which is the same as the one in AB 66.
AB 68 Ship John Adams account book 1841–1845
Volume contains records for the ship John Adams for its 1841–1845 voyage out of Nantucket, including crew members’ accounts, and supplies purchased. During said voyage the ship John Adams was owned by David Joy. Also during said voyage the ship John Adams was captained by Isaac Stockman who died on the voyage.
AB 69 Timothy G. Clapp account book 1838–1840
Volume contains account records of a Tailor.
AB 70 George Starbuck and William Starbuck account book 1859–1862
Volume contains records of outfitting the ships Hero, Three Brothers, Alpha, Alabama and Norman.
AB 71 George Starbuck and William Starbuck account book 1859–1861
Volume contains records of bills and provisions for the ships Three Brothers in 1859, Alabama in 1860, Alpha in 1860 and Norman in 1860.
AB 72 Commercial Wharf treasurer’s book 1850–1909
Volume contains notes from the proprietors’ meetings, and notes on arrivals and departures of vessels. Volume was kept by M. Crosby, Henry Coffin, James Easton, A. Whitney, Charles C. Crosby, and Reuben C. Small.

AB 74 Zaccheus Hussey daybook 1819–1821
Volume contains records of building supplies and hardware transactions for the whole period this volume was kept, as well as records of house rentals for the period of 1820–1821.
AB 75 T. Fitzgerald and N. Fitzgerald account book May 1836–October 1837
Volume contains records of a dry goods store.
AB 76 Samuel Cary account book 1826–1852
Volume contains records of personal transactions, such as money coming from boarders and some coming from carpentry work. Volume also contains records of house rentals and dry goods sales.
AB 77 Ship Omega account book September 1836–November 1837
Volume includes information on the slop Chest of the ship Omega as well as expenses of crew members for its 1836–1840 voyage out of Nantucket. During said voyage the ship Omega was owned by Joseph Starbuck and was captained by Albert C. Gardner.

AB 78B Ship Phoenix account book March 1858–April 1859
Volume contains records of account for the ship Phoenix for the period March 1858–April 1859 during its 1856–1858 voyage out of Nantucket. During said voyage the ship’s initial captain J. Hinkley became ill and the second mate B.G. Hand became captain. Also during said voyage the ship Phoenix was owned by Gardner & McCleave.
AB 79A Stephen Hussey account book 1759–1781
The keeper of this volume was both a blacksmith and a shipsmith.
AB 79B Francis Joy daybook 1793–1799
Volume contains records of sales of sperm oil and candles as well as dry goods.
AB80 Hussey Folger and Company account book 1837–1843
The keeper of this volume is unknown.
AB81 Cyrus Hussey account book 1799–1822
Volume contains records of account for a shoemaker, as well as records of sales of dry goods and flour. Volume is marked as ledger “A” on its front cover and contains records of account for the ship Union during 1804 on page 61.

Volume contains records of account for the bark Norfolk during the period of 1833–1836. During said period the bark Norfolk was captained by Matthew Luce. Volume also contains separate records of account for an unknown purpose spanning the period of May–November 1933.
AB 86 Cyrus Hussey account book 1793–1804
Volume includes records of account for a Cobbler and Shoemaker.
AB 87 Thomas Starbuck account book 1793–1795
Volume contains records of account for butchering and meat sales. Volume also contains records of ship investments including on the ship Randolph.
AB 88 Great Point Lighthouse journal of vessels 1878–1881
Volume contains records of vessels passing Great Point Lighthouse. Volume was later used as scrapbook by Miss M. Swain. The keeper of this volume is unknown.
AB 89 Ship John Adams memorandum book 1837–1843
Volume contains records of account for the ship John Adams. During the period the volume was kept the agent for the ship John Adams was David Joy.
AB 90 Ship Roman account book 1848–1851
Volume contains records of account for the ship Roman including crew members’ withdrawals during voyage. During said period the ship Roman was captained by Sanford Wilbur.
AB 91 Schooner Lucy Church account book 1862–1871
Volume contains records of account for the schooner Lucy Church including general bills, repairs and freight work. The keeper of this volume is unknown.
AB 92 Ship Young Hero account book 1842–1846
Volume contains records of account for the ship Young Hero for its 1842–1846 voyage out of Nantucket. During said period the ship Young Hero was owned by Joseph Starbuck and Captained by Peter C. Brock.
AB 93 General Store account book 1855
Bark Sappho was written on inside cover. Volume was later used as a scrapbook.  Volume may have been kept by Edward B. Coffin.

AB 96 Strait Wharf treasurer’s book 1843–1848
The keeper of this volume is unknown.
AB 97 Slops Chest Supplier account book 1851–1860
Volume contains comparative slops chest lists. Said lists includes personal supplies to be sold to crew members of numerous Nantucket whaling ships, such as clothing, bedding, soap, combs and needles. The keeper of this volume is unknown.
AB 98 Ship Three Brothers account book and merchandise inventory February 1852–November 1853
Volume contains records of account and merchandise for the ship Three Brothers during its 1851–1854 voyage out of Nantucket. Said records of account and merchandise include individual crew members’ expenses during the voyage. During its 1851–1854 voyage the ship Three Brothers was owned by G. and M. Starbuck and Sons, as well as captained by Joseph S. Adams. The Keeper of this volume is unknown.
AB 99 Caleb Macy account book 1740–1771
Volume contains records of accounts of work done as a shoemaker and also as part-owner of whaling sloop.
AB 100 Albert B. Swain daybook 1840–1855
Volume includes sales of dry goods and alcoholic beverages.
AB 101 Nantucket Post Office account book August 1818–November 1819
Volume includes individual accounts toward postage on letters.
AB 102 Sloop Hard Scrabble and Schooner Enterprise account book 1846–1848
Volume includes information on the costs of supplies, labor and crew. Some pages in the volume were later used as a scrap book. The keeper of this volume is unknown.
AB 103 Benjamin Howland ledger #2 1788–1805
Volume includes business and personal accounts varying from carpentry to dry goods. Volume is marked as ledger #2.
AB 104 Shoemaker account book 1843–1846
The keeper of this volume is unknown.
AB 105 Bark R.L. Barstow account book 1862–1865
Volume contains a settlement of proceeds from sale of sperm oil from a voyage out of Nantucket.  Said voyage was captained by Charles W. Hussey. This volume may have been written by Joseph B. Macy.
AB 106 Ship Omega account book October–November 1836
This volume contains accounts from the ship Omega’s 1836–1840 voyage out of Nantucket, during which it was owned by Joseph Starbuck and captained by Albert C. Gardner.
AB 107 Gardner Coffin and Joseph Starbuck account book 1827–1831
Volume contains records of cordage Sales, to ship Hero in 1830, ship Omega in 1827, ship Loper in 1830, ship Rose in1830 and ship President in 1831.
AB 108 Outfit for a whaling voyage
Volume is not filled out and contains informational tables, including lists of needed items for a whaling voyage, as well as lined note space.  Volume was published by Swift & Allen dealers in ship chandlery, hoops and cordage, Taber’s Wharf, corner of Front Street, New Bedford, Mass.
AB 109 Outfit Book 1866
Volume would have been used for checking off ship’s stores and supplies, however it is unused, although it contains some scribbles and numbers on the back cover.
AB 110 Hezekiah Bunker receipt book 1766–1814
Volume contains receipts of Captain Hezekiah Bunker during his time aboard the brig Industry as well as his time aboard other vessels on various voyages.
AB 111 Bark Triton outfit book August 1876
Volume contains records of outfitting and supplies for the bark Triton’s fourth voyage, which sailed out of Nantucket in 1876. During said period the bark Triton was owned by J. and W.R. Wing and captained by the Charles F. Keith.

AB 113 Francis Joy and son account and invoice book 1817–1820, 1822–1823, 14–22 May 1869
Volume contains records for Francis Joy and Son including invoices of casks of sperm oil and boxes of candles shipped to various ports for the period of 1817–1820, accounts and returns to the estate of Francis Joy and Son for the period of 1822–1823 and records of arrival and departure of vessels for the period of May 14–22 1869.
AB 114 Ship Christopher Mitchell account book October–December 1852
Volume contains accounts including lays of crew members of the ship Christopher Mitchell for its 1848–1852 voyage.  During said voyage the ship Christopher Mitchell was captained by Thomas Sullivan. Volume contains accounts for Joseph Mitchell, Thomas Sullivan, William W. Wood, Benjamin D. Clark, William W. Plass, Oliver B. Fish, Job P. Rounswell, Joseph W. Hussey, Charles F. Mitchell, William H. Williams, James W. Denison, James C. Kelley, Gorham G. Andrews, Charles Eddy, Joseph Atwood, Thomas Hally, John Westcott, William Henry Waitt, James Taylor, John Lopez, John Austin, William Cochran, William Dunham, John Gorham, George Newbury, and David B. Sprague, along with others.

Volume was later used as a scrap book.
AB 116 Ship Columbia account book 1854–1859
Volume contains records of expenses and crew payments, for the ship Columbia’s 1854–1859 voyage out of Nantucket.  During said voyage the ship Columbia was owned by C.G. and H. Coffin and captained by Hiram Folger.

John M. Winslow (1844- ), was the son of Perry and Mary Ann (Morrow) Winslow and was married to Eliza B. Randall in 1869. John M. Winslow lived at 6 Quince Street, Nantucket and served as Fish Warden in Nantucket in 1878 and as Postmaster in 1897.
Volume includes accounts pertaining to fish merchandizing business and mention the schooner Malabar, the yacht Mable and the schooner Nimble.

Volume includes letters concerning purchases of supplies for whaling ships owned by J.W. Barrett and Sons, and letters to captains of those ships including the “United States,” the “Napoleon,” the “Ontario,” and the “Maria.” Volume also includes correspondence concerning sale of candles, spermaceti, and whale oil.
AB 542 B & B letter book 1823–1826
B and B was a retail business, selling candles, oil, clothing, shoes, hats and cloth. Many items ordered through them from the mainland were shipped by the sloop “Enterprise,” which was commanded by a Captain Hussey, and various other packets. John Barrett of B and B may be John W. Barrett.
AB 543 James Cary and Betsey Cary account book 1802–1817
Volume contains records of account for a business with accounts up to 1812 being those of James Cary; his wife Betsy continued with her accounts through 1816. Early accounts include China trade items such as tea, China ware, nankeens, satin and nutmeg. Later accounts are for ribbons, needles, calico and other common fabrics, spices, cranberries, raisins, shoes and teacups.
AB 544 Steamer Petrel account book (Photocopy) 1900–1917
Volume includes mentions fish caught by “dory from shore” and traps. In the volume beginning with 19 August 1909 is a daily record of the “Doings of Steamer Petrel and Gang.” This book appears to be a companion to AB 517. The item held in the repository is a stack of photocopied pages of the original volume.

Volume was most likely written circa 20th century as it was kept in ball point pen and contains alphabetical lists of Ships with their Captains, Departure and Return dates, for 1700s through late 1800s. There is an index in the front of the volume. The keeper of this volume is unknown.
AB 546 William Watson account book 1833–1838
Volume includes records of William Watson’s work as a cooper for various agents and owners, namely Samuel Mitchell & Sons and James Mitchell (also referred to in the ledger as S & J Mitchell) as well as the ships Lone, George, and Obed Mitchell. Volume details, in part, the work that went into outfitting and repairing a whaleship, and the prices a cooper charged in 1830s for his services.

Volume contains records of account for the ship Constitution of Nantucket, including accounts for outfitting and a summary of oil sent home by the ships Peru and Young Hero at the end of the volume. Joseph Winslow was captain of the ship Constitution during the period that this volume was kept.

Volume includes mention of stockings, threads, buttons, ribbons, shoes, hose, pins, braid, calico cloth, linen cloth, check cloth, silk cloth, and duck cloth. The keeper of this volume is unknown. Pages have been cut from beginning of volume.

Volume contains account records from the grocery store of William Holland, which was located at 39 Main Street (according to the 1914 Nantucket Directory). Volume was found in the third floor attic of 35 Main Street.
Accounts of many individuals are listed, which include foodstuffs and prices. The cover of the volume is inscribed with the word “Cliff,” and thus may denote that the accounts were for people living on the cliff (including Cliff Road).
AB 551 Fernando G. Echeverria account book December 1918–July 1919
Volume contains account record with the grocery store of William Holland, which was located at 39 Main Street according to the 1914 Nantucket Directory. Volume was found in the third floor attic of 35 Main Street. Volume lists the accounts for Fernando G. Echeverria, who is listed in the 1909, 1919, and 1927 Nantucket directories as living at 9 Cliff Road.
The cover of the Volume is inscribed with the name Echeverria. Volume concludes in June of 1919, when Mr. Echeverria settled his account.

Volume contains records of account for the grocery store of William Holland, which was located at 39 Main Street (according to the 1914 Nantucket Directory).
Voolume was found in the third floor attic of 35 Main Street. Accounts are listed for the Springfield House, Robert Mack, Congdon’s Pharmacy, Levi Coffin, George Abbott, Athletic Club, Marcus Dunham, Nantucket Railroad, Dexter Nickerson, and others.
AB 553 Caleb Bunker and George Bunker account book 1701–1777
Volume was kept by George Bunker (1671–1744) for the period 1717–1741 and by his son Caleb Bunker (1699–1777) for the period 1765–1777. Includes financial accounts, records of judicial proceedings, and marriages performed by George Bunker and Caleb Bunker. Volume includes references to legal cases involving Indigenous people.
AB 554 Schooner Bolivar account book and merchandise inventory 1849–1850
Volume contains account records for the schooner “Bolivar,” including lists of provisions and casks of oil. Volume also contains entries, as if from a log, listing course and weather for several months in 1850.
AB 555 Account book 1850–1867
Volume lists accounts with vessels and individuals.
The keeper of this volume is unknown. The keeper, or business with which keeper was associated, dealt in whale oil (Possibly G. and M. Starbuck or Charles G. and Henry Coffin as some of the vessels listed in the ledger were owned by these houses). Volume seemingly was purchased by its keeper at Thomas Crown Stationer, Boston (label on inside cover). A number of blotting sheets are inserted between pages.

Thomas Coffin and Company appears to have been based in Philadelphia (see pages 293 and 366) and to have dealt in whale oil. Ledger includes accounts with Timothy Hussey, David U. Salter (Portsmouth), Daniel Vaughn (Charleston, S.C.), William Reed (Marblehead), Jonathan Dorr & Co. (Roxbury), Asa & Caleb Russell (New Bedford), J. & E. Odiorne, and James Coffin (Edgartown), Nantucket Pacific Bank, Zaccheus Hussey & Sons.

Ebenezer Phinney was engaged in selling to whaleships and merchants in the early 19th century. Volume references sales in Nantucket and Edgartown, Martha’s Vineyard. In the volume there are many references of selling cord wood (both pine and oak) to vessels.

Charles Lewis was engaged in selling supplies to whaleships and merchants in the early nineteenth century. Volume references sales in Nantucket, Edgartown, and East Falmouth, Massachusetts of cord wood (pine and oak), as well as molasses, pork, hay, beans, and other foodstuffs.
AB 559 Hudson City Savings Institution receipt book 1783–1786
Volume contains notes of receipt of money, each list, Nantucket as city of transaction, the date, a notation of the amount of money exchanged, and from whom.
Some transactions also record the reason for the exchange of money, including payment for voyages, exchange of goods, etc. Receipts are arranged in chronological order, from July 7, 1783 – November 28, 1786. The last page of the account book is inscribed, “Charles C. Hubbel, Hudson, NY, Oct 20, 92, Hudson City Savings Institution”. Volume was originally contained in a brushed aluminum box.

Volume is a partial account book, recording individual’s payments on their commitment to purchase a share of an encyclopedia. Each share was $6.52. Volume also contains a list of circulation of volumes of the encyclopedia, by individual.
AB 568 Straight Wharf meeting minutes 1793–1894
Includes meeting minutes of the owners or proprietors of Straight Wharf (spelled “Strait Wharf” until 1811). Early meetings included the naming of a moderator, clerk, and approval of articles. Throughout the book, there is a record of the name of the wharfinger, the number and ownership of shares, and repairs and changes to the wharf.

AB 573 Copies of Certificates of Registry Issued in Nantucket, Massachusetts 1845, 1856–1864
Volume is a ledger with engraved pages in which are recorded true copies of registration certificates for vessels. Certificates include details of the vessel’s master, the place and date when the vessel was built, and the vessel’s measurements, tonnage, and rig. Original copies of these certificates are located at the National Archives; photocopies are available in MS67 but are of poor quality. Volume includes an abstract of vessels employed in the whale fishery in the district of Nantucket, Mass., as of June 30, 1862, and an abstract of vessels employed in the whale fishery at Nantucket, Mass., as of June 30, 1864.
