Biographical Information
This is an artificial collection of account books assembled by the Nantucket Historical Association.
Scope and Content
Financial books of individuals, businesses and some tradesmen, also financial records of ships. 469 account books give current prices through the years of Nantucket’s growth. Of particular interest are the accounts of the small businesses which served the whaling industry as well as the farmers and householders who stayed home.
Materials in this collection were digitized with support from Connie and Tom Cigarran.

Volume is a ledger with engraved pages in which are recorded true copies of registration certificates for vessels. Certificates include details of the vessel’s master, the place and date when the vessel was built, and the vessel’s measurements, tonnage, and rig. Original copies of these certificates are located at the National Archives; photocopies are available in MS67 but are of poor quality. Volume includes an abstract of vessels employed in the whale fishery in the district of Nantucket, Mass., as of June 30, 1862, and an abstract of vessels employed in the whale fishery at Nantucket, Mass., as of June 30, 1864. | ||
