Biographical Information

The Nantucket Angler’s Club was founded in April 1969 to promote sport fishing and tourism on Nantucket. Operating out of their clubhouse on Old South Wharf, the Anglers Club organized fishing tournaments for the summer of 1969 and onwards. In August 1969, they began the First Annual Nantucket Billfish Tournament. By 1991, the tournament had attracted anglers from around the United States, and the catch expanded to include swordfish, white marlin, and blue marlin in addition to billfish. Between 1990 and 1995, the Tournament was named the “Captain Pete Guild Billfish Tournament,” after the first Angler’s Club president, Edward M. (Pete) Guild. To manage the influx of visiting boats, the Angler’s Club worked with the Nantucket Boat Basin to dock participants.

Cynara Reid, of Nantucket, Mass., is an avid fisher and member of the Nantucket Angler’s Club. In 1981, she became part of the organizing committee for the Annual Billfish Tournament, for which she built boat kits.

Scope and Content

This collection contains tournament rule and regulation booklets, registration forms, rosters of participating boats, boat kit contents lists, award summaries, bar and meal ticket lists, and materials related to tournament administration, including duty sheets, schedules, and registration forms and maps for the Nantucket Boat Basin. An ephemera file includes an unattributed poem about tournament fishing as well as guides to fishing published by national fishing organizations. A Boat Kit Carrying Case is also included in this collection.

Rules and Regulations booklets include organizing committee names, catch and release guidelines, participant forms and worksheets, and winner photos and information from the previous year.

Annual tournament materials are not equally represented between files (i.e. most years have rule booklets, but only a few have kit lists). The 1997 tournament is not represented in this collection.
