Biographical Information

This research was compiled by brother and sister, Henry Barnard Worth (1858-1923) and Helen B. W. Worth (1861-1907).

Henry Barnard Worth (1858-1923) was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Captain Calvin G. Worth (1812-1879) and Helen B. Winslow (1835-). He graduated from the Bridgewater Normal School, and attended Amherst College for a year. He attained the bar in 1885, and set up practice in New Bedford, Mass. He was married to Sarah E. Tuelb in 1891, later to Emma Cleveland Higham (-1944).

Worth was vice-president of the Nantucket Historical Association and secretary of the Old Dartmouth Historical Society, as well as a member of the New Bedford Free Masons and the Union Lodge of Nantucket.

Helen B. W. Worth (1861-1907) married Calvin Worth (1812-1879), son of William Worth and Rebecca Gardner. The couple had two children, Henry Barnard Worth (1858- ) and Helen Barnard Winslow Worth (1861- ). She was a member of the Nantucket school board, vice-president of the Children’s Aid Society, and secretary for the Nantucket Improvement Association.

The Worth family are descendants of the early European settlers of Nantucket.

Scope and Content

The Henry B. and Helen B. W. Worth Papers consist of personal research notes as well as copies of deeds, letters, court records, genealogies, and marriage and death records. They cover Nantucket land acquisition, Quaker memberships, Native American relations, Wampanoag language, and Folger, Coffin, and Worth genealogies. The majority of this collection is copied from other records. The originals of some of these documents are housed in Nantucket, Mass., and Albany, N.Y. The origins of some of the documents is unknown.

A number of notebooks were bound by an unknown party in 1946. The original tittles of bound volumes have been retained.
