Dolores Laviani and family are of Douglaston, New York. Dolores’ grandmother Adeline Posello (1899 – 1984) lived in Kew Gardens, New York. In July 1955, Adeline embarked on the SS Andrea Doria from New York City to Italy. In October, she returned to New York aboard the same ship from Naples, Italy.
The SS Andrea Doria was an Italian luxury ocean liner for the Italia Line that launched in 1951. The ship embarked on its maiden voyage in January 1953. In July 1955, the ocean liner left New York City for Genoa, Italy. A return trip to New York embarked on October 15, 1955, from Genoa.
The Andrea Doria sunk less than one year later on the morning of July 26, 1956, fifty-three miles southeast off the coast of Nantucket, Massachusetts. The night before, the MS Stockholm collided with the Andrea Doria in dense fog.
The ship would stay afloat for eleven hours, allowing 1,660 passengers and crew to evacuate the ship. Forty-six people on the ship died though as a direct result of the impact.
Scope and Content
The Laviani Family Scrapbook on the Ocean Liner SS Andrea Doria contains activities programs, menus, a passenger list, postcards, a letter and photographs from the SS Andrea Doria. Items were collected by Adeline Posello (1899-1984) when she went on a round-trip voyage on the ocean liner between New York City and Italy in July and October of 1955. One postcard of the Andrea Doria is postmarked from 1953 however.
Of note is a booklet listing all passengers on the voyage of the Andrea Doria between Genoa, Italy and New York City in October 1955. The booklet also contains a map of the ocean liner’s voyage routes and a list of main crew members. Eleven program booklets document daily activities from both the July and October voyages. Dinner menus from the October passage are also included.
Items were compiled into a scrapbook by Adeline’s granddaughter, Dolores Laviani, and family.
