Guide to the Nantucket Brass Band Records, 1856–1893

Summary

The Nantucket Brass Band was formed on 6 August 1856 for the purpose of supplying commissioned musical entertainment on Nantucket Island and in nearby mainland communities. The group was disbanded on 17 November 1860 by unanimous decision, and then reactivated circa 1893. Collection includes minute book containing names of members and events, program of The Flower Queen, and contract to rent uniforms from when the band reformed.

Biographical Information

The Nantucket Brass Band was formed on 6 August 1856 for the purpose of supplying commissioned musical entertainment on Nantucket Island and in nearby mainland communities. The group was disbanded on 17 November 1860 by unanimous decision, and then reactivated circa 1893.

Scope and Content

Collection includes minute book containing names of members and events in Nantucket, Mass., and off-island, at which the band performed, including concerts, parades, fairs, and special events such as the celebration of the laying of the Atlantic Cable; program of The Flower Queen; and a contract to rent uniforms from when the band re-formed.
