Mapping Nantucket

What has put Nantucket on the map? What should be put on a map of Nantucket? In this exhibit we present a selection of historic maps and nautical charts that suggest answers to these questions. The island’s ponds and hills, its town and villages, its location in the sea—these appear on many maps. But what about the island’s people? Its fame and enterprise? Its sunshine and diversions? How can these be mapped? Explore and see what mapmakers, both on and off island, have chosen to highlight over time.
