Anna Gardner was born in 1816 into a Quaker family on Nantucket Island. A life-long advocate of equality in all aspects of American society, she fought for equal rights for people of color and for women. Her life illustrates the commitment of some dedicated civil rights activists of the nineteenth century.

Nantucket Book Clubs is a new project created by Nantucket Book Partners (Mitchell’s and Bookworks) to connect and collaborate with the Nantucket community. We reached out to nonprofits, businesses, and community members to pick books to read and discuss together in 2022 according to their missions and interests. Our 2022 Book Clubs focus on grief, leadership, climate change, connection, community, diversity, and much more.

The Nantucket Historical Association preserves and interprets the history of Nantucket through its programs, collections, and properties, in order to promote the island’s significance and foster an appreciation of it among all audiences.
