History Makers: The Art of Silversmithing

The History Makers Series connects objects from the NHA collections with its history, and the process of making the object.  This provides participants a greater understanding and the significance of an object and its place in history.

This lecture demonstration, master Silversmith Steve Smithers will discuss the history of silversmithing on Nantucket from the 18th Century to the present day.  See examples from the NHA collection and learn about their origin and the silversmiths who made them.  There will be a discussion and demonstration of some of the tools and techniques involved in creating silver for the home.

The Nantucket Historical Association preserves and interprets the history of Nantucket through its programs, collections, and properties, in order to promote the island’s significance and foster an appreciation of it among all audiences.
