The Essex Gam relates the tragedy of the whaleship Essex, stove by a whale in 1820 in the Pacific Ocean, and of the ill-fated crew. This real-life story was the inspiration for Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick.

The Nantucket Historical Association preserves and interprets the history of Nantucket through its programs, collections, and properties, in order to promote the island’s significance and foster an appreciation of it among all audiences.
