Sailors Scuttlebutt Lecture Series: “Cruising the Atlantic” with Alfie Sanford

Alfie will talk about his years cruising under sail through Nantucket’s exquisite waters, and will discuss the island’s special place in the Atlantic. He will cover learning to sail in the 1950’s and, currently, his long distance cruising with his sailboat IMPALA.

Alfie describes: “Cruising is the art of exploring the interaction of the land and sea. Land and sea intertwine in a myriad of ways that create particular local geographies. Visiting these locales by sailboat brings one in touch with their peoples and cultures. Important, because learning about places afar teaches us about home.”

Sanford Boat Company was established in 1977 to reproduce Herreshoff’s magnificent Alerion design in modern wood cold-molded construction. The result is the Alerion Class Sloop, known as the world’s finest day-sailor. The Alerion Class Sloop has been in  production at Sanford Boat Company for 40 years.

This lecture series is presented in partnership with Nantucket Community Sailing.
